Hey Mark:

I know that this might seem like awfully long range planning, but it's about next year's West Coast Lotus Meet (WCLM) so I've kind of got to do it.

As you might know, Kiyoshi Hamai (my contact with the Golden Gate Lotus Club) has suggested that maybe a few of your club's members might like to caravan north with some of their members (and other club members from down south) on their way north to Seattle for the 2013 WCLM.

Of course, I have no idea where any of these people will be spending the night(s) on the way to Seattle from California, Colorado, Arizona, etc., but I thought maybe they might like to stop in Portland for the last night before they headed on to Seattle.

At this point (and you are the first to know this other than Kiyoshi!), I'm thinking that the WCLM would officially run from Thursday, July 4, 2013 through Sunday, July 7, 2013 and I'm thinking that most of the Thursday, July 4th part would be the final driving time getting to Seattle with a welcoming dinner for all participants that evening.

Now this is new!... You might like to know that I've been talking with the people at The Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, Washington for a while about a possible "Track Day" there, but their schedule and ours just don't seem to line up at all... so, just yesterday I sent them an e-mail asking them what sort of an event they have going on there on Thursday, July 4th and if it would be possible for people heading up to the WCLM to stop in, watch whatever it is that they've got going on that day and maybe drive a few "Parade Laps" around the track during a (lunch) break in any racing (or whatever) that might be happening there that day???

It just seems like it would so easy to take a little detour to Shelton and The Ridge facility on the way to Seattle rather than to ask participants in the WCLM to drive back down south to The Ridge during the WCLM. Plus there's a nice drive-in-the-country route north to Tacoma and on to Seattle from Shelton that might even include a ferry boat ride... how fun would that be!?!!

If I encourage the "down south" people to stop in Portland for the night (maybe at one of the Jantzen Beach motels (easy access to I-5 and handy to the bridge into Washington) of Wednesday, July 3rd... do you think you could organize a dinner get together for them and members of CLNW that night (maybe right there at those motels to keep it simple?) and then maybe encourage some of your members to travel north to the WCLM the next day in caravan with those people?

Just thinking out loud!

I probably won't make it to tonight's meeting. Here's the info on the upcoming garage tour.

Saturday, Oct. 13

We'll begin about noon at Jon Lexau's shop, where we can take a closer look at his pair of Lotus cars. He has a neat basement shop with a garage door entrance at the back of his house. It's pretty well equipped with all the stuff he needed to re-engineer his Europa to become something of a modern-day Type 47. Anyone who has seen it circle PIR knows that it goes like stink and makes some really wonderful sounds down the front straight. 

From Jon's shop we'll travel about a mile to my place. My shop is much more basic than Jon's. I've been rebuilding an S-2 Europa in it for the past three-plus years. The car isn't done yet, but it is along far enough that's it is ready for a show-n-tell. 

I'm also trying to get my neighbor to open his garage door so folks can see his Europa project. After watching the glacial rate of change on my car over the years, Robb bought his own project car about six weeks ago and has been making outstanding progress on it. I now fear it may be finished before mine.

Lunch will be served at my place. June is making soup and bread and we'll have something for dessert. We'll also have wine and beer available. Our tastes in alcohol are somewhat pedestrian, so if anyone prefers something fancy, they'll have to bring it along.

Jon's house is at 8180 SW Miller Hill Road in Aloha. Mine is at 18212 SW Fallatin Loop, Aloha. Both addresses show up on Mapquest/Garmin etc., but I can also provide directions to folks who prefer to get lost the old fashioned way.

It would be great if folks could let me know if they plan to attend, so we know how many bowls I have to wash ahead of time. They can reach me at jfboone at aol.com

We are trying to get a handle on how many folks may be making it to Saturday's CLNW Garage Tour. 

It will begin about noon at Jon Lexau's shop, and then move about a mile down the road to mine, where we'll serve lunch. June is wondering how many folks she'll be cooking for.

Right now we have about a half-dozen who have indicated that may be attending, and this includes two owners/members who are just launching into Europa projects. They are looking for kindred spirits who can encourage them in their projects, and maybe offer a bit of advice or words of warning.

Hello:

I just thought a few of you might be interested in taking a look at the STP/Andy Granatelli, Lotus turbine car that raced at the 1968 Indianapolis 500 that is on loan and on display at the LeMay - America's Car Museum right now down in Tacoma.

I took this and a few other pictures of this car when I was down at the LeMay Car Museum last Tuesday morning meeting with the Events Coordinator to do some advance planning for next year's (2013) West Coast Lotus Meet which our club is going to be "Hosting" that is going to be happening in and around Seattle, Thursday, July 4th thru Sunday, July 7th... put this multi-day event on your calendar, it's going to be a lot of fun!!!

According to the information sheet, this car (#70) was being driven by Graham Hill. It had started in 2nd place and was in 4th place when the right rear suspension collapsed sending Graham and the car into the wall and out of the race, during lap number 110. The STP/Lotus being driven by Joe Leonard started the race in first place and was leading with only nine laps to go when his turbine experienced a "flame out" causing him to have to pull into the infield with no power... dang! 

Car #70 is on loan from The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation and I don't know how much longer it's going to be on display, so, if you've ever wanted to see one of these unique cars (used/allowed at the Indianapolis 500 only once!), you might consider visiting the LeMay Car Museum sometime soon.

Just some quick instructions for those who are coming over this weekend 
and are afraid of Google maps. :)

Heading west on Farmington (hwy 10), you will find SW Miller Hill Rd 
just past Hazeldale Elementary School on your left, and it is about 
where SW 200th St would be if you're counting numbers.  Head up the hill 
and we are almost at the top on the left; if you hit a major cross 
street (Gassner), you've gone a little too far.  I've got one of the old 
British field meet Lotus category signs that I'll try to attach to the 
mailbox or something out front.

If as many people as Jerry says are coming, then it might be good if a 
few of you could park behind the house.  Just take the gravel driveway 
down the right side of the house and there's room in back.  The garage 
entrance is down there anyway.

Thanks for your reply to my message and for saying that you'd bring up the subject of a possible dinner for participants in next year's WCLM (heading up from "down south") on the evening of Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at your next CLNW Business Meeting on Sunday, October 21st.

Now for a little tiny up-date on my thinking... how about you getting in touch with the Manager or Owner of the Portland Lotus Dealership to see if they'd like to at least partially help "Host" this Wednesday night dinner!?!!

Maybe the Portland Lotus Dealer could pick up the tab for a cocktail party/reception before dinner in the motel that the people from "down south" would be staying in and maybe even have a few brand new Lotus cars near the entrance to the motel, or maybe even inside! How about that for an idea!?!!

Oh, and BTW, do you or anybody else with CLNW have any
 suggestions/recommendations regarding motels in the Jantzen Beach area (handiest to I-5 for arrival and departure) that could accommodate a bunch of Lotus cars (some of which might even be in trailers)? Plus, it'd be nice if they had or were immediately adjacent to a decent restaurant for the evening's dinner.

PS: You might like to know that one of the main events during the 2013 WCLM will be attendance at the "4th of July SOVREN Vintage/Historic Races" at Pacific Raceway in Kent... we'll be attending (in mass!) the Saturday, July 6th day of racing. It'll kind of be an "anchor" event for the WCLM.

The 2013 Festival will have a double special focus. The main theme will be A Tribute to Steve McQueen.  
We'll be doing our best to bring some actual Steve McQueen cars to the Festival, so if you have any contacts in that regard, please help us. 
Mention Steve McQueen and everyone thinks about the best car chase scene in movie history with the Bullitt Mustang and the sinister Dodge Charger. But do a little research and you will discover that McQueen?s favorite cars were his Jaguar XK-SS, Ferraris and several Porsches. So, our secondary theme will be a Salute to the 50th Anniversary of the Porsche 911.

At the last few Meetings I have been talking about the possibility of CLNW getting involved with?helping to put on the Portland All British Field Meet starting next year.?I touched base with one of the?big wigs?at the last?PDX ABFM about that possibility and my very basic understanding is it would require someone to attend the planning meetings during the year and of course volunteers during Labor Day weekend. Now, I also understand that CLNW was involved in the past (before I joined the Club) but stopped because the Club was just to small and?did not have enough people to help. Now, I also know the Club has been gaining Members for several years and although we are still a small Club I feel we have enough Active Members to be able to do this. The big question is can we get enough Committed Volunteers for this and is it something you think the Club should do? My plan is to discuss and vote on this during the Sun. Oct. 21st 2012 Business
 Meeting. Two positive things I feel right off the bat that would come from this are:

??? 1. It would help to up our visibility locally.

????2. It would get us more involved with the local British Car Clubs and help us to build some good relations with them.

I'm sure there are many more good things that can come from this.

??? Just a reminder this is not the same as the WCLM involvement next year, which is also something we plan to discuss and vote on on Sun. .

The plan is to vote for two locations to hold our future meetings at, one on the west side and one on the east side of the river, *** taking into account our general requirements discussed in prior e-mails (these can be found on the club website in the e-mail archives) and at prior meetings ***. The idea here is to make the travel as fair as possible for everyone as we will alternate locations. I do not have a ballot made up yet and don't plan to until Sat. night to give people time to get last minute recommendations in, but it will include all the meeting locations we have gone to since I became a member, including the new ones we have tried the last few months and some recommendations we did not make it to, also any recommendations I get before Sun. . If you have a favorite place on the west side and east side of the river and let me know before Sun. ,?I will add it to the vote.

??? This Sat. morning at 2:00am (set those DVR'S) on Comcast channel 46, The Suze Orman Show (business and finance), I have never watched her show before. Has a segment on buying a Lotus Evora (hopefully positive). This has been on a HD channel I don't get, but this is the first time I have seen it listed on a regular channel.

Memorial and Labor Day weekends at Portland International Raceway (PIR) in Portland, Oregon. ??? Here is a quick update on some of the key votes taken at the Business Meeting last Sun. in case you were unable to attend.

??? - We will not be getting involved in helping to put on next years All British Field Meet in Portland. The main reasons are we already have our Track Day that Fri. and during the rest of the weekend a large part of the Club is involved with the SOVREN races, so we just do not have enough people to help at this time.

??? - We will be getting involved in helping with the Portland and S.W. Wash. parts of next years West Coast Lotus Meet. Lotus Of Portland will also be getting involved and helping as well, Thanks Steve!! One concern that was brought up, was if a deposit is required for the hotel room holding for people from out of town stopping here for the one / first night. I have confirmed with Doug Jackson that if a deposit is required the Golden Gate Lotus Club will cover it so it would not cost us anything.

??? - We will increase the Track Day prices sightly in 2013 to $220.00 for Members and $240.00 for non-members. This is due to the increased cost to us from PIR. This is our first increase in a while but, we are still a better deal than most track days out there.

??? - The two locations for future Membership Meetings were voted on and the winners were West side - Lucky Lab N.W. and? Hello:

I thought that it might be a good idea to send out an early e-mail message to let y'all know that Kiyoshi Hamai of the Golden Gate Lotus Club (GGLC) had reached out to me and the (Seattle, Washington-based) Evergreen Lotus Car Club (ELCC) a while ago to see if we were interested in "Hosting" the 2013 West Coast Lotus Meet (WCLM) and (after conferring with the various officers & special volunteers who help run the ELCC), I told him yes we were!

During the past month or so, Kiyoshi and I have come up with the beginnings of a Plan for what we think is going to be a really fun, multi-day 2013 WCLM that will include: a Welcoming Cocktail Party & Dinner at the "Host Hotel/Motel" the first night; a visit/tour of Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection (which is a very interesting collection of mostly operable WWII airplanes and tanks); a traffic cone-based autocross; a fun buffet-style dinner at a very nice nearby casino; part of one day at the Society of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts (SOVREN) Vintage/Historic Races at Pacific Raceway; a fun tour,? Lotus Car Show and bbq at Griot's Garage in Tacoma; a dinner & awards ceremony in the newly-opened LeMay - America's Car Museum; a few connectingly enjoyable drives-in-the-country to get us from place-to-place; etc... all of which will occur during the days of Thursday, July 4th thru Sunday, July 7th.

So, mark your calendars and talk this up within your local Lotus Car Club and related Lotus community because we'd really like a lot of you to be participants in this next summer's West Coast Lotus Meet.

Of course, there will be more detailed information and probably a web site set up in the near future (for registration, etc.), but I thought that at least a few of you might like an early "heads up" regarding this event which is being planned for next summer.

If any of you have any questions at all about any of this... please feel free to send me an e-mail or give me a call.

And, please feel free to "forward" this e-mail message to anybody you think might be interested in this information.
