Hello everybody: As a few of you might already realize, it's less than two weeks until the Vancouver, B.C. All British Field Meet, which is scheduled to occur on Saturday, May 17th. In addition to the wonderful British car (and a few motorcycles) show which occurs on Saturday, there's always a fun dinner (and sometimes a silent auction) the night before at the "Host Hotel" and remember, our friends who are members of the local Lotus Car Club of British Columbia (LCCBC) have invited any of our ELCC members who attend or take part in the Vancouver ABFM to come to an after-car-show dinner at a really nice, casual (and fairly nearby) golf course restaurant. Just introduce yourself to Ron Solomon or any of the other members of the LCCBC during the ABFM and they'll help lead you to the dinner location. I would assume that this close to the Vancouver ABFM all of the rooms in the "Host Hotel" have already been reserved, but there are plenty of other hotels and motels in Vancouver, B.C. to choose from either in the downtown Vancouver area or out closer to the beautiful Van Dusen Botanical Gardens on Oak Street which is the venue for the ABFM. To find out more information about the Vancouver ABFM, just "Google" Vancouver, BC All British Field Meet (or something like this) and up should pop the web site of the event. And don't forget that you need a passport or an Enhanced Driver's to travel across the border between the USA and Canada. Doug Jackson PS: Unfortunately I won't be able to attend this really fun event this year seeing as how I'll be at my grand daughter's 4th birthday party. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Evergreen Lotus Car Club (ELCC)" group. During some spirited driving today with my local auto club, I went against a guardrail. A left turn with some gravel/debris plus a mistake on my own for going to fast into the corner, landed me sweeping the very hard guardrail. Luckily Im ok, as I hit the rail at approximately 35 mi/h, but the angle of the impact meant that most of the force was transferred to the wheel and then to the control arm and finally to the frame. The undoubted star of the show is Jim Clark's 1965 Indianapolis 500 winning Lotus 38, which forms part of the resin brand's Indy 500 Winners Collection. Clark scored a landmark victory at the Brickyard that year. Since 1960, British teams had attempted to win the famous race with their rear-engined machines. This period was known as the British Invasion. Clark first raced in the 500 in 1963, finishing second. Just two years later, he would dominate the race, leading 190 of the 200 laps to take victory in his Lotus 38. It was the first time a rear-engined car had won at Indy. Clark subsequently became the only driver to have won the Indianapolis 500 and the Formula One World Championship in the same year, a feat that is unlikely to ever be emulated. We cannot wait to receive this model. Matt, of course, will be adding it to his rapidly expanding (thanks to Spark) Lotus collection. If you would like to obtain Spark's 1:43 replica of this truly historic Lotus you should act quickly, as Jim Clark subjects have a habit of selling out on, or very shortly after, they are released. In the late spring of 2011, Diecast Legends took on the mantle by opening a shop at 15 Cecil Court, just one minute away from the previous encumbent. We're very proud of our new shop and think it's something a little bit special. Large it is not. In fact, it might more properly be termed a boutique, but it's jam-packed with all the best replicas the diecast world has to offer. We get all the new releases as soon as they arrive in the country. At the same time, we try and cater for all types of collectors and enthusiasts. Whether you're into F1, rallying or touring cars, classic racers or modern supercars, we think you'll find something of interest. So, come and see us when you're next in town. We're just a minute from Leicester Square and Covent Garden tube stations, and less than two from Piccadilly Circus or Charing Cross. However much you want to spend, we don't think you'll be disappointed; we reckon it's the best little diecast shop in the whole wide world. Click here to visit the site. Hello everybody: I thought perhaps a few of you might be interested in the e-mail correspondence that I recently had with the Hillbank/Superformance people and Bruce Beachman of the local Beachman Racing company about Caterham cars. As you can see, if you are interested in purchasing a Caterham car (which is the legitimate "continuation" of the Lotus Seven (7) cars, you can still work with a local company. A few of you attended a very interesting Open House "Shop Tour" at Beachman Racing a while ago, so you know what a terrific job they do in setting these cars up for street or track us (or both). Doug Jackson ?? ?? Just a couple of pictures that I took during the "Shop Tour" at Beachman Racing. ________________________________ From: beachmanracing at mac.com Subject: Re: Superformance Caterham Seven Date: Sat, 10 May 2014 15:20:04 -0700 To: douglasejackson at hotmail.com Hi Doug, The contract for US Distribution of the Caterham Seven was given to Superformance in January. ?Hillbank Motor Coporation is a Dealer, located near Superformance in Southern California.? As indicated on the US Caterham website, we (Beachman Racing) are an authorized Caterham Cars Service/Installation center, and motor-sport specialist. ?We can also assist any local or regional buyer with the purchase of a Seven, and have practical knowledge/experience with titling/licensing these vehicles in the states of Washington and Oregon. We have been building, modifying, and racing Sevens for our clients since 2008. ?And as you and some of the other club members know firsthand, we have a new, modern, well-equipped facility, capable of undertaking any project (Caterham, or otherwise). Our role in the Caterham ecosystem has evolved, ever-so-slightly, since Superformance has taken the helm. ?Navigating the very strict federal laws regarding partial kit and self-built vehicles is important. ?Federal law prohibits kit/roller manufacturers and their agents (aka dealers) from also selling the powertrain package, building the kit, and/or installing the powertrain. ?After carefully assessing where we added most value (expert engineering and mechanical services; motor-sport), it was decided to focus on those facets of the overall Seven buying/owning experience. ?Having said that, we have a formal arrangement with Hillbank - so as mentioned above, we are happy to assist in the purchase of a new vehicle roller/kit. I hope that clears things up. -Bruce On May 9, 2014, at 8:04 PM, Douglas Jackson wrote: Hello Bruce: > >Are you aware of this Hillbank Motor Corporation/Superformance relationship with Caterham Sevens in the US and, if so, what relationship (if any) does your company have with them? > >Doug Jackson, Chairman of the Evergreen Lotus Car Club > > > >________________________________ >From:?marals at hillbankusa.com >To:?chair at elcc.org >Subject: Superformance Caterham Seven >Date: Fri, 9 May 2014 14:47:00 -0700 > > >Hello Doug, >? >We at Superformance just got an invite? from ?Rahul Nair about attending and sponsoring the 2014 West Coast Lotus Meet.? Mark ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Douglas Jackson To: ELCC Members Sent: Wednesday, May 21, 2014 10:58 AM Subject: [ELCC] Colin Chapman and the Indianapolis 500... Hello everybody: First of all, Colin Chapman would have been 86 years old on May 19th if he hadn't died a long time ago. Secondly, because the Indianapolis 500 race is to be run on this coming Memorial Day I thought that it might be fun to look back at the 1968 race in which four turbine powered, four-wheel drive, more-or-less wedge-shaped cars which were sponsored and entered by Andy Granatelli's STP corporation and raced by Team Lotus. There is a nice article in the current issue of Lotus Ltd.'s Lotus ReMarque magazine about these very unusual cars (referred to as Type 56) which I'll pick a few things out of... Of course, a special team of people was assembled at Hethel to bring these cars to life. This team was headed by Colin Chapman, designer Maurice Philippe and a small group of engineers. I suspect that when these cars were unloaded from their trailers for the first time at The Motor Speedway, people were pretty amazed! During the race, one car failed right away, but the other three motored on very fast and smoothly for most of the race and one of them only stopped functioning properly (while in the lead!) very near the end. The story goes that because these unusual cars did so well, the were banned from ever entering this race again! Clive Chapman (son of Colin) and Classic Team Lotus (CTL) undertook the complete restoration of the chassis and running gear of Type 56, Chassis 3 (the car driven by Graham Hill) and it will be featured with the other two Lotus turbine cars (one seems to have "gone missing") in a Parade Lap or two before this year's Indianapolis 500. Vince Granatelli (son of Andy) undertook the installation of the turbine power to get the car running properly again. As Clive said toward the end of the rather short-fused restoration deadline, it was "all hands to the pumps" to get it done. There was a small team of people assigned to the project, but nearly everybody at CTL contributed some time to the job. As Clive also said, "Happily Vince and I have managed to avoid the ups and downs that were a feature of the relationship between our mercurial fathers... so far". ? ? ?? This is a picture I took of one of those STP/Team Lotus race cars. It was on display at LeMay - America's Car Museum for a while and I'm pretty sure that it is the "Graham Hill" car. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Evergreen Lotus Car Club (ELCC)" group. Today, we are leading with the latest delivery from Minichamps, with the most exciting model being Kimi Raikkonen's 2013 Lotus E21 from the 2013 season. Kimi's start to the 2013 season couldn't have been better, with victory at the Australian Grand Prix. A further seven podium finishes moved the Finn into third place in the drivers' championship before his season was cut short by a back injury following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Kimi is still one of the most popular drivers in the sport, and Minichamps' replica of his E21 is absolutely brilliant. Click here to buy yours now. The model in question is a 1:32 scale De Havilland Mosquito MM403 that was used by 464 Squadron during World War Two. 464 Squadron, which was formed on the 1st December 1942, used the Lockheed Ventura bomber before switching to the De Havilland Mosquito in the middle of 1943. The squadron quickly developed into a capable unit, attacking enemy lines of communication, as well as static targets both by day and night. With its speed and reliability, the Mosquito was the ideal machine for these low level bombing offensives. We originally had this model listed as a 1:72 scale, and were pleasantly surprised to find it was the larger scale when it arrived. In fact, this is the largest Corgi plane we've ever seen, measuring some 52cm across. The model is a limited edition of just 1100 pieces worldwide, of which we only have a handful.
